If you ask my mother in law, she'll tell you ZERO dogs and ZERO cats are the limit. Just be lucky you don't live with her. We have three dogs, two cats, three snakes, and a fish. Plus a stray cat I feed. I think when your house starts smelling and there is so much fur everywhere that no one comes to visit, you are at your limit.
