Cricket was a feral kitten when she first showed up in my yard, and she accepted me as soon as she associated me with food--I put food out for her and stayed around nearby while she ate. Within a couple of meals I was able to pet her while she was eating. Then I scooped her up and brought her inside, where (after the requisite health checks) she quickly took over.

Bob was another matter. I had to sit on the floor in "his" room and gradually (we're talking weeks here) was able to coax him into my lap. It took several more weeks before he decided to venture out of his room and join the rest of the household. He's still a no-see-um when anyone visits, although he's a big purring lovebug with me. But he was at least three months old when he first ventured into my backyard. At five weeks, I think you've got a better chance of overcoming Chevy's "feralness" quickly.
