A responsible breeder will have homes lined up for the pups before they are born, and will have provisions in place for any extras or in case people back out. Selling them to a pet store because she prices them too high (and therefore, didn't have homes for them in the first place) is not at all responsible.

A responsible breeder will make sure you know about the breed and make you prove you can have the dog where you live. He/she will also make you sign an agreement saying you will spay/neuter the dog, and will take it back if at any time of the animal's life you cannot take care of it. If a dog is in a pet store, how can the breeder enforce that policy?

A good breeder doesn't do it for profit.
