No, desert tortoise's are not illegal as long as they're registered with the AZ Game and Fish Dept. (which Helmet is). Also you're only allowed to own two at the same time. It is illegal to snatch them from their desert environment. We got Helmet from legitimate sources. If not, I sure wouldn't be plastering his picture all over!
Helmet was the size of a quarter when we first got him. And look at him now! We've had him about 4 years.
