Volunteers are ur-ently needed to -oin a ten day field trip
to help locate and record two of Tasmania's most elusive fro-s ~
the Southern Toadlet and the Smooth Fro-let.
"This field trip has -een or-anised to collect new data which will
update and improve our -nowled-e of these mysterious
autumn -reedin- fro-s."
"Fro- enthusiasts ~ and isn't that every-ody ~ can -oin the trip at
any sta-e, and can participate for a day or the entire ten days,
" says Dr Michaels.
Volunteers -een to -oin the field trip should en-oy Tasmania's
fic-le autumn weather, shouldn't mind rou-hin- it and -e prepared
to -et a little muddy if necessary.
The Smooth Fro-let is a plump, dar- -rown fro- with li-ht -rown
stripes, white -elly and pin- thi-hs. It is usually found in coastal
heaths, sed-es and forests in western and central Tasmania and
-in- Island.
The Southern Toadlet is a small -urrowin- fro- which wal-s
rather than hops. It also has colourful mar-in-s ~ a -ri-ht
oran-e throat and -ac- le-s and a mar-led -lac- and -lue
pattern on its -elly.
"Conditions in Tasmania are favoura-le at the moment and the
field trip has -een planned to coincide with the time that these
fro-s are most active and there-ore easier to detect," says
Dr Michaels.
