Rebecca you are so lucky to have such a wonderful dog in your life! Dogs can do wonders for sick people. My father has ALS (AKA Lou Gherig's Disease) and our Basset Hound, Daisy, can bring a smile to his face no matter how sad he's feeling. They have a special bond, and she knows to be extra gentle with him. She will jump at us to grab toys from us, but if we place a toy on Dad's lap, she reaches up slowly and takes it. They just KNOW.
