I have MSN instant messenger too. Right now I have it deactivated because my accounting software was crashing a lot and I heard that that might be because I have all these programs running in the background. Check my profile for my email which is what my account is under. I'm going to re-activate MSN and de-activate my fax and scanner and see if that solves the crashing as well.
I don't know too much about instant messenger ettiquette. If you are "on-line" but are busy and can't talk is there a setting that lets people know that or do you just respond to that effect? So far there is only one person that I instant message with and because she is from Australia and I am in USA, we aren't on at the same time that much.
