I always thought the fruit is the part of the plant that comes after the blossom.Melons come after blossoms. But then that would make tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, cucumbers, and other veggies fruits too!
I don't know how they divide it, but personally, I divide it as (sweet and/or juicy: fruit) (not sweet, less yummy, can be cooked for dinner, not so juicy: veggie)
I know that melons are "considered" fruits and so are pinapples (they are far to pretty to be a veggie!) so I take them as a fruit. Oh well.
