The North Koreans may or may not have an actual functional nuclear bomb.
What they don't have is a miniaturized nuclear device that can go on a missile. That took the US and the USSR more then a decade after development of the weapon.
It's saber rattling by an extremely unstable regime who has their backs against the wall and an unknown as a leader.
Should they actually make any military moves, it's going to result in a lot of casualties and a nonexistent country. China, their sole ally, isn't happy with their actions, and may not back them in a military action, as China's economy is mostly reliant on trade with the US.
Their military looks impressive on paper. However, just ask Saddam how well starving troops fight. IN addition, they don't have the tech to stand up to a modern military.

Their figurehead had Dennis Rodman for a visit.....he's a scary, unstable guy. These actions by the North have been cooking for a long time, they were inevitable. Hopefully this is a wakeup call to the world that backing unstable, repressive regimes is a losing game for all involved.

Kim the Youngest is trying to establish his bona fides, IMO. He seems out of touch with reality. North Korea has a huge infantry, and not a whole lot else. Any war that North Korea starts is going to end in a humanitarian disaster with North Koreans streaming across both the DMZ, landmines or no landmines; and across the northern border to China. (This is all strictly my opinion and speculation.)

The elephant in the room in all this is that neither South Korea nor China want to be strapped with a relatively uneducated, starving brainwashed minority when all is said and done.
South Korea was paying attention to the reconciliation of East and West Germany (the East German population wasn't uneducated, they were, however, impoverished and technologically backwards compared to the west)
