Boots literally walked into Phred's house and the his, Cinder and Smoke's lives back in the summer of 1998. He was a faithful companion for Phred up until a few years ago, when he took his trip over the Rainbow Bridge. Here's a picture that was taken back n 2006.

That's how my mom and bro ended up with Fred. He walked up to mom and said, "I want in!" He walked in with no fanfare or drama and has stayed around.
