Now I just stick with the same shade and if for some reason I ever wanted to change my color to a much darker shade, I'd have it done professionally first to avoid any problems.
That's what my hair dresser told me as well. The pigments in your hair contrasts with the pigments in the dye resulting in a darker color. Now, I usually keep my hair the same shade too. If I go for a change, I go to a professional so I don't have to go through that again.
