Cameron and I made them out of gourds. They are held together with toothpicks pushed through the top and bottom of the stacked gourds. The ears are simply foam sheets cut into triangle with a straight pin running the length of the foam and pushed into the gourd. We painted on the faces and stuck a bow around the necks to hide the uneven line where the top and bottom didn't lay smoothly.

the faces are nothing but craft paint. I outlined the eyes and nose with black magic marker.

It took more time cleaning up than making them.
