Sgt. Timothy D. Sayne, 31, of Reno, Nev., died Sept. 18 in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, of injuries suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 5th Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Fort Wainwright, Alaska.

Former Effingham man killed in action

EFFINGHAM — Former Effingham resident Timothy D. Sayne was reportedly killed in action in Afghanistan Sunday.

The 31-year-old U.S. Army sergeant was stationed at Fort Wainwright, Alaska, according to information obtained from Hall Funeral Chapel. He has been in the Army since 2008.

Sayne, an Effingham High School graduate, was the son of Mary “Kathy” (Even) Sayne of Effingham and Robert Sayne. He has one son and another on the way with wife, Thania.

Services will be held in Effingham at a yet-to-be-determined date, with interment in Arlington National Cemetery.
