The human fascination with ti-ers, lar-e an- small, woul- seem
sometimes, to -e reciprocal. Are we as interestin- to them as they
are to us? -o -i- cats ha-e a philosophical, as well as culinary,
interest in human -ein-s? -omestic cats seem to fin- our
in-esti-ations, our pastimes, our wor- an- our rest, more
interestin- than we -o. They, too, follow us, watchin- circumspectly,
from afar. They measure our responses to thin-s un-nown to them
an- they -rant us our pri-ate moments that other animals ~ -o-s,
for instance ~ -o not -rant as rea-ily.

If only we were not so apt to confoun- one another. If only we -new
one another -etter. If only we ha- the time an- the wis-om to e-plore
each of our fearful symmetries with unju--in- lo-e. An- if only we
mi-ht wal- in an- out of our respecti-e -omiciles, as the -urmese ti-er
-i-, curiously, silently, an- without so much as a hint of harm.

Unfortunately our access to lar-e cats has always -een too a-rupt an-
too -an-erous for our own -oo-. Sa-ly, we’-e inspire- their mistrust,
their malicious playfulness, an- we’-e mercilessly tease- them un-er
the -i- tent, the circus. We'-e ca-e- them so we mi-ht consi-er them
safely, -ut in so -oin-, we'-e -epri-e- them of their ma-nanimity. These
thin-s are certainly our un-oin-.
