The most outlandish Aprils Joke for me was a front page Article appearing in the Birmingham News when I was a Kid.
For many years, that I could remember, there had been talk of building a tunnel through Red Mountain to cut down on traffic problems and make the morning drive from "over the Mountain" burbs fast.
The Morning Headlines Read, "Red Mountain Tunnels Opens Today" this was almost a full page article complete with pictures of the Tunnel entrance on one side. There was a detail article on how two teams of tunnel builders had been building this tunnel, for the past few years, working from the middle out to , what would be the entrances, at the ends. One tunnel entrance was near downtown Birmingham and the other in Homewood several thousand feet away. The article was very believable until the last word of the story, APRIL FOOL. They hide the "April Fool" ending by having, "article continued on page xx", at the bottom of page one.
