A friend had this surgery a couple months ago. She was pretty sore for awhile and had to have radium implants. She takes thyroid replacement along with iodine supplement and is doing great now.

Wombat, Have a save trip & good thougts & prayers sent down under for your wife & you. I know of two people that have had thyroid surgery & they are doing great.
