Dear readers of this thread, my town has a "Home Rule?" referendum on the Nov. 2 ballot. What is home rule, and is it good?

I always felt sorry for Rhode Island, as I am sure you gets lots of political commercials for other states because you're small geographically, and wedged between MA and CT.

Too me a while, but noow I realize WHY we get those commercials.

If you live in Southeastern Mass., and you use Comcast, you do NOT get the Boston channels, you get the Providence ones! it is not an option, you just can't get the Boston news at all on your TV.

I am with all of you on those negative ads. The whole process is disgusting and it turns people off! It gives you the idea that the only choices you have and BAD choices and you have to choose the lesser of the two evils running.

I'm wearing out the mute button on my remote. I get Connecticut, New York and New Jersey ads and I'm sick of it. I must have gotten 6 calls from the same number one night. The worst part is if you're not home, they somehow leave your line open! I keep getting "Please hang up and try again" from the phone company, when I didn't initiate the call. Grr.

To all politicians: if you REALLY cared about our country, you would stop spending millions (billions?) of dollars on ads that drive us nuts and won't change our minds to vote for you. We already know who we are voting for or, in my case have voted. Put the money back in the country so we can reduce the debt or give it to low income people who will stimulate the economy by spending it.

I heard on the news today that early voting in Cook County is up almost 3 times from where it was at the 2006 mid-term election. Voting by mail is also popular. I can do banking, buy groceries and pay bills via the Internet; I wish I could also vote on line. That would be a huge time saver.

But can you imagine the potential for hacking and fraud? What could be more exciting for a bored 11-year-old than influencing a US election?

The candidates are still calling my house - robocalling anyway, several times a day. I'm thinking I could just keep a tally, and vote for whichever candidate calls me the least!

The RI elections are crazy.

Saw on the news this election year will set a new record for the total spent nation wide on campaigning. Sigh.

The Final Days

For half of the candidates on Tuesday's ballot, these are the days you remember.

If you win, you remember what comes next. But if you lose, you always second-guess what came before. You have years — decades, even — to Monday morning quarterback your campaign, to revisit what you should have thought, said or done, especially in the final days, when time almost stops and you campaign day and night and it seems (usually wrongly) like every decision you make is crucial.

Mostly, they aren't so crucial. Most races are "decided" even now. Polls don't vote, but they're usually right (especially when they show you losing). But if the races that really are still up for grabs have already dwindled, if the last-minute decisions mostly won't determine who wins or loses, for those who lose, these are the final minutes in the spotlight.

My best advice to candidates is very simple: Use them well. They may not determine whether you win or lose, but they will define you in the public eye. They will be the measure of your class. This is legacy time, whether that's what you were aiming for or not.

This has not been the kind of campaign that would make a mother proud. Any mother. I don't know that I've ever seen a nastier, more mean-spirited race — but then, it feels like we say that every two years. Seriously, though: It. Has. Been. Bad.

In the old days, candidates really did switch back to positive ads in the closing days of campaigns. Closers, we called them, literally. Close on a positive note. What an old-fashioned thought. These days, only candidates with double-digit leads worry about closing positively.

No, the new danger in closing weekends of campaigns is that the worst of the past year or two all gets concentrated in one little weekend: all the attacks and counterattacks, and viciousness and innuendo, with the added protection that there is barely time to respond, much less figure out the truth. Campaigns that have gone badly tend to end badly and leave everyone feeling angry and embittered. The truth is that they don't really end, even though they should.

We need to end this one on Tuesday. If not before.

I hope at least a few candidates in these closing days will stop to say something positive about their opponents, about the other party, about the need to work together after Tuesday, about the values and ideals we share and how they are far more important than what divides us.

I hope at least a few candidates will take the time to remind themselves, and us, why they got into this business in the first place, what they dreamt of, what they hoped to accomplish, and why it's important to still believe in such dreams even after you've been through such a process.

I hope at least a few will give the kind of speech they'll be proud to re-read when it's all over because it was right and true, and not just the product of careful research and polling; that a few will get ahead of the nastiness and the ugliness and will stand tall and proud and for something better than we've all been mucking through for the past few months.

I hope at least a few will be thinking of life after Wednesday, because it will make it a whole lot easier for all of us to get through the rest of the week ahead. The people who lose on Tuesday may not set the agenda for the future, but in defeat, they can set the tone. For better or for worse.

All you Canadian folks who live near the U.S. border must be getting REALLY sick of being inundated with all the nasty ads running one after the other.. to do with a whole system and culture you have no part in! (aren't you glad?)

I'M really sick of all the ads, and I have to vote or not vote for these clowns next Tuesday.

We handed in our absentee ballots today.

Mine was a sight to see - 1 from column A, 1 from column B, a couple more from column C - and so on down the list. I even wrote in NOTA a few times (none of the above).

Oh my God yes. I am so incredibly tired of this BS I want to scream. No one tells us what they stand for or their vision just what an SOB the other person is. Those adds that come in the mail telling me how to vote, right in the trash can they go. I don't even bother to look at them.
I get my facts elsewhere as do most of us.
But you know friends that as soon as the election is over we will be bombarded with
CHRISTMAS COMMERICALS!!!!!!!!!!
It just seems like there is no end in sight to the consent stream of brainwashing we put up with through TV, print, phone adds.
Buy this, buy that, you kid needs this toy for Christmas, this new gadjet is a must have.
It is like we are mindless robots buying what is put in front of us the most.
I plan on buying lots of books for Christmas presents and things people need not the new fad.
Ah well here I am talking and what do I want for Christmas but a Coach purse, kettle black folks. LOL

Instead of using the ads you're purchasing to tell me why I should not vote for your opponent, could you please use them to tell me why I should vote for you?

There are those phone calls too. You run your butt off to get to the phone & then there are the politicans & their buddies talking up a recorded storm. I even got included in another town meeting. It is the same old same old. Make promises & don't keep them. Raise the taxes too why don't they & Give themselves a raise to boot.
