Rocky is getting "fixed" tomorrow

we have to take him in today and won't get him back until Friday..we have had him for 4 weeks exactly today..it is gonna feel weird now not having him in the house..at least we will get some sleep around here but we will miss him for sure!,,anyone else have their kittys nutered/spayed? did they do ok with it? did they need any pain meds afterwards??? is it ok to give them childrens tylenol for pain?

Poor little Rocky. I hope everything goes just well, and in his absence, you can make his little space at home really comfortable for him. Boys always seem to have an easier go than little girls, but I know it will be just fine.

All six of my babies are altered, and all did well. I do remember Tenny peeing in the potted plant as soon as I brought him home. I think he was confused..it was very funny.

As to pain killers, I don't think that is appropriate, and I don't think I would go with the tylenol either. I can't remember which it is, but something in the aspirin family isn't good for kitties..

After my incident with Nakita, I am for sure going to educate myself on the medications and drugs given to cats while being operated on.

Nakita was given Ketamine mixed with a sedetive and pre-op pain controller. I was searching on the net and found a pile of information that really made me aware that one has to educate themselves before any medical procedure is done on their cat. There are some real negative opinions on using Ketamine over other options. I have not done enough research yet to form an opinion, I have just read other's opinions.

It has opened up my eyes to the Education before Action. In reality, most pet owners would have no clue what drugs were administered at the vet's since they are suppose to be the experts.

99% of the time everything goes well, but precautions and education don't hurt just in case. Please talk to your vet and know what drugs are going to be administered and so you have the knowledge.

Oh, and stay away from the home medications such as aspirin. Unless it is directly prescribed and supervised by a vet, it can be very toxic!

I have heard that the reason why animals don't get painkillers after some surgeries is so they won't overdo it and hurt themselves. It sounds cruel, but it makes sense. An animal that is hurting a little will tend to take it easy and rest, if there is anything masking the pain, they might act normal and do further damage to themselves.

My male kitties have sailed through the operation and return to normal within a day or two. It barely slows them down at all.

Hi RockysMom,

If you are worried about post-operative pain ask you vet to provide Rocky something. Since Rocky is going to be kept overnight and in a kennel he won't be able to do much moving around anyway.

When I had Emily spayed my vet gave me the option of giving her a post-op pain killer (of course having an idea of what was going to happen I decided to give it to her). She was just fine the next day and eating like a horse (like always)

I've never had any problems getting my pets spayed/neutered. I've always had it done at the Humane socitety. They operate in the morning and then you pick them up in the evening. Tibby my female was just kind of groggy that night, but the next day she was fine. She wasn't as active as normal but she acted fine. Corkscrew (my male) he was slightly less groggy that night but the next morning he was acting like nothing happened.

Thanks for all the replies yall..You are such a wonderful group of ladies here...at least most of you are ladies aren't ya?
I took Rocky about 2:00 this afternoon and it was very hard leaving him...harder than I thought it would be..I just stuck my finger in his little carrier and said "I love you sweetie!" and he just gave me a sad look the nurse in there was talking to him when we first got there and said to him "we are going to take good care of you Rocky boy!" and he hissed at her and backed up in his carrier..he just looked scared...she said to him "do we have a little attitude here?" I thought that was pretty funny but I have never seen him that scared and it just broke my heart....I miss my little guy already..

I know what you mean....its so hard leaving them, let alone making them go in their carriers for the trip there. I just returned from the vet with Basil and I hated the sad face he had while he was a prisioner...

Rocky will be just fine....you most likely wont even notice a difference when he comes home. Boy kitties have it much easier.
