Irene just called me, just before 10:50 MT.
She and another person are overnighting at the hospice; Greg, the priest I know, was to go up tomorrow.
He left about 20 minutes ago.
Joe is unconscious and unresponsive. He has been dying for a few weeks, of course, but this looks like the end.
He has been in a lot of pain the past several weeks; even Irene was wanting him to die so that the pain would be over for him, at the same time being torn up because he was going to die. That horrid mixed feeling.
I joined Irene at the hospice yesterday afternoon. Joe and I were out on the smoking deck waiting for Irene.
The breeze was chilly, but the fall sun was nice. Joe appeared to doze in his wheelchair, then opened his eyes and said, "That feels good." "The sun?" I asked. He nodded, and closed his eyes again, soaking it in.
Asking for prayers for Joe and Irene, and Karen who is with them too. Irene promised Joe that she would be there for him, as far as she could. And she kept her promise, even though she herself has put off surgery to treat something that has her in great pain.
Thanks, all.
ETA: Irene phoned me just after 3:30. Joe died peacefully at 3:05 am.
It's all right now, Joe.![]()
