    To Misty's Mom re: CRF

I know how heartbreaking it can be when dealing with this disease but I was relieved to hear that you chose treatment instead of the final alternative. Too many vets don't tell their clients that there is hope, and solutions - and that the pussycat can live a happy life for some time to come.

My Beyli was on Fortekor (Benazepril) once diagnosed (daily) as well as Famotidine (or Pepcid) also (daily) - amounts determined by weight by the vet. I also gave him Sub Qs which he thankfully didn't give me any trouble with (every 2-4 days).

As for the food - he was very clear about not wanting the food from the vet and I can't say that I blame him - it didn't have any pleasing odor and it was dry (even if water was added). So he chose the following canned foods (all with much healthier ingredients than ALL of the prescription diet foods at the vet which tend to be full of filler (meals, rices! - cats are carnivores...) over the years he was with me - Wellness (Turkey), Evo, By Nature (Organics). Since they have problems losing fluids and dental issues, he basically got canned food and his blood tests stabilized very quickly (even the vet was impressed and told me to keep feeding him THESE foods, not what she sold). I also raised his bowl (for example, you can use a shoe box) and it helped lower the acid build up because the food had a more direct route to his tummy.

I wish you good luck and many years to come with your Misty - please feel free to write to me.

Please have your pets sterilized as soon as possible to lower, and one day hopefully eliminate, unwanted and abandoned pets. It IS our responsibility. Adopting from a shelter also helps - encouraging breeders just adds to the overpopulation.
