Nancy just got back from vacation and has a few readings ahead of me. I'll share her insight when I hear from her.

Two days after this last incident, I took Kia and Chipper to the park. Saw some dogs that looked similar to Max and Chipper had no problem with them. It's odd.

In the past, Chipper's been "attacked" twice at the dog park and he immediately submits, so even if Max is sending signals, I don't understand why Chipper just won't submit.

sometimes there is just something about certain dogs. it could even be something you just havent noticed yet since you have no dogs to really compare. while I hear the "build" argument all the time..I have actually had more issues with COLOUR. Misty is fine dandy and friendly..to all but medium to large RED dogs. red dogs more then an inch smaller then her are just like any other dog, she has often met 2 dogs of the same size, same build, and same breed, where one was red and the other was not...and in each case she is totally normal with the non red, but went ballistic upon SIGHT of the red one, dont matter to her if its a doberman, a pit or a retriever.

or Happy has issues with certain dogs that I have yet to figer out, Schnauzers are a hot spot for her, she can be totally fine with them one minute and go nuts on them the next, any other breed when she is ok with them once, she is ok with them forever. the one exeption is Macy..Macy is a Heeler/Pyreneese X and as often as Happy has met this dog, and as long as she has known her..she HATES Macy, darned if I can figer out why!

Heeey, I'm so sorry to hear about Max and Chipper. He is such a great boy at the dog park!!! But I guess dogs can kinda be like humans, in the way that some dogs just rub them the wrong way... I really hope your neighbor doesn't start getting mad at you for this... I hope he understands that Chipper isn't usually like that!!!

Are you still having inter-dog issues?

I personally would explore behavior modification, both human and dogs, a bit more. If you want tips on training this to a manageable level, let me know

We haven't seen Max since the last 'encounter'. Mainly because our schedules are very different.

Chipper hasn't bothered anyone else (various dogs at the dog park; Calypso; or the new pitbull, Roxey, that moved in).

Kimmee I am sorry to hear about this, but after 14 yrs with Goofy I tend to agree it may just be your neighbors dog rubs him the wrong way, I have seen Goofster behave terrific with the same dog in a certain sitch, and then behave like a nut in another one, I have also seen her just take an immediate dislike to another dog period. To the point that she will go in her crate and shut the door behind her rather than have me scold her( more like I know you wont like me being aggressive so I will go lie down before you put me in here). I do hope this wont cause issues with your neighbor, and I hope for his sake that he (your pup) relaxes a bit so he can find a great new buddy! We can never have enough fun buddies to spend lazy summer afternoons playing with can we?

Tonight Max and Calypso were outside playing unbeknownst to me when I took Kia and Chips out for their nightly constitutional.

After they pottied, I asked Jim if he was fine with me letting Chipper off leash. He said to give it a shot.

Chipper charged up to Max, who submitted instantly. They sniffed, licked, and then began to play.

Chipper can be a bit overbearing and dominant which I reign in and he thankfully listens. Max is a sweetheart to put up with Chipper's shenanigans.

Kia just adores Max and play bows to him. And I can thank Calypso who loves to tackle Chipper and divert his attention when he's picking on Max.

So while they may not be best friends, I'm glad it's not all out aggression.
