As I knew it would be a different vet from Friday I took a copy of the picture I posted here to show him. He thinks, as I do, it is healing quite well so instead of taking him in he used and prescribed a gel to be used twice daily to promote the healing process. Bob goes back Thursday to check said healing progress and we'll go from there.
So very sorry you're both having to go through this. I'd be happy to drive you to the vet. I hope things get better for you both soon.
