Yes they can. It's called a Splenectomy as my girlfriend had it done years ago with her dog Max, due to cancer. Thankfully it was caught in time and didn't spread and Max lived to almost 14 years old. He was a German Shepherd.
IMO, I would get a second opinion and see what options are out there to help your beautiful Blue. My concern is that, right now it's a small bleed, but what if the spleen tears open more and he starts to bleed to death. I don't want to put a scare into you or put a downer on your thread, but I just can't believe there is nothing that can be done for him. Unless you can tell me otherwise.

My RB boy Willie had cancer found in his spleen at 10 years old and his spleen was removed. He made it through well and survived on to 13. I do hope Blue can be helped, he is a stunning boy and obviously well loved.

I'm sorry to hear about your big guy.
I have always loved seeing pictures of him, he is just so handsome with those stunning blue eyes. Assuming these pictures are recent, he certainly looks like he is doing well for now! I love the picture of him looking back at the camera with a "smile" on his face.
Please give him some extra loving from me, will you? :-)
Blue is a gorgeous fella. I love all the pictures of him. He is a big sweetheart. I hope his vet can just remove the spleen and he gets to stay around for alot longer.![]()
I've been Boo'd...
Thanks Barry!
If we had known earlier then a splenectomy could have been arranged. Right now he has bled out too much, his age seems to be affecting him more then it should be. If we went ahead with it chances are he would still die (possibly sooner) and he would only be able to enjoy a little quality of life, if any. I really want to do anything to make him better but sometimes the best way to help them is to make them comfortable.
Blue is seven years old, at age six (for his size) they are considered seniors.
He is still going strong, still smiles, still eats, still drinks, still goes to the washroom, still wants to cuddle and he is still going. Until it seems painful or seems to be too much we will let him live.
