I get my septic pumped every two years and here it's the law that you can't go longer than 3 years w/out having your septic pumped. They keep a record and if you don't do it, you get notified. I'm in the boonies, and we don't have any laws around here to that effect. I have double the required leech field, so that may be why I've never had any problems. I know that with all the environmental issues anymore, all new construction requires a mound system, rather than the buried tank system. And they are VERY expensive so I hear - and an eyesore IMO! Of course in town, no septic tanks allowed, you have to be on the town's system.
