I got permission to post an update on Xochi.
She had her surgery on Wednesday.
The surgeon met Xochi for the first time that morning and took her away. She didn't fight anyone or whine. I know she was just ready to have this done. Off I went to work a nervous wreck.
Around 2:30 I got a call from the surgeon saying he was finished with her surgery. The cancer was not a hard tissue, but was very hard to get off her spinal cord. At least, hard enough that they didn't want to scrape it all off since it is indeed her spinal cord and that would do more damage than good. I was allowed to call 2 times per day that she was in the hospital for updates, which drove me crazy....I felt I should have been able to call as many times as I wanted. It's not like she was just getting spayed...she had a big time surgery! When I called Wednesday night they said she had thrown up once so they weren't offering food just yet. No worries considering she had so many meds in her, she was bound to puke.
Yesterday I got a call from the surgeon first thing in the morning and he was pleased with how she was doing. She was walking with minimal assistance, but essentially the same as when I took her in. This is good though, because we expected her to be paralyzed immediately after sugery. She's using a sling (which I hold in one hand with it wrapping around her belly to hold her up). She can walk without it, but using it helps her and reduces her pain.
.....
She has to go in about a week to get her staples (21) taken out. She wouldn't let me ice the area today, but we'll try tomorrow. I also have to schedule her appointment with the radiation oncologist and rehab. It's going to be a long, long month. I just noticed on her paperwork that someone wrote how to pronounce her name on all the sheets. Hehe....Xochi = So-chee. I'm glad they tried to say it right.
