I know that it can be frustrating when an answer is not forthcoming, but sometimes it is hit or miss. I do not have experience with eye problems with my cats, knock on wood, but here is what I would do. First, mention that the ointment seems to be doing more harm than good and ask if there is an alternative. Second, and this may not be possible (I do not know the area around which you live ) but a second opinion may be in order. People's hunches can be very helpful in determining the problem, and since you've had experience with the herpes virus and you know your cats better than any vet, if you believe it is something else, then you should follow up on that hunch.
