Marigold, a hospital stay in Denmark is pretty much the same as you descibed in Germany. I have been to a few different hospitals in Copenhagen and have visited friends and family there too. Depending how ill/sick? you are, you get to share a room with 3 or even 5 people, but you also get a room on your own, or share with one other person. These days, each room has a bathroom (like in a hotel) and if you want a TV in your room, that is possible too in most places, I believe. Also a cell phone. And there's a library who comes round with books you can borrow.

In recent years, it has been possible for rich people to go to private hospitals ... to cut the waiting list, but if you suffer from certain decieces?, your doctor can admit you to one of those free of cost, and you can also choose to go to a hospital in another European country to get treated there (if the waiting list is long).

I'll say it again, I'm happy to pay a bit more tax for everyone to be able to go to hospital (and your doctor) for free!

Your description of a regular hospital room doesn't sound that bad to me.
The only bad part might be being stuck in a room with a obnoxious, loud
    roommate.
