The proble- -ith elephants in the night is that the- be-o-e in-isible. E-en if
-ou shine a light on the-, -ou don’t reall- see the-. Possibl- it’s be-ause at
night -ou need to get relati-el- -lose to things before -ou -an see the-, and
the -er- si-e of an elephant up -lose offers no re-ognisable -ie- of the -hole
ani-al. All -ou see is dar-ness.

As a rule I tried to a-oid dri-ing at night, but one Frida- e-ening after
attending a s-hool fun-tion -ith the girls, I had no -hoi-e but to dri-e ho-e
in the dar-. About half-a- ho-e, the -assi-e bul- of an elephant bull
loo-ed up rather too late in the bea- of the headlights. He had his head
in the bushes alongside the road and his behind on the tra-- dire-tl-
in front of us. I sla--ed on the bra-es, pulling up right under the
elephant’s ru-p. His hind legs bu--led at the -nees (as usuall-
happens -hen an elephant is startled) and his enor-ous posterior began
des-ending onto the bonnet. -aiting for the -olossal -run-h, I -losed
-- e-es, but lu--il- the elephant -hanged his -ind about sitting do-n
and -harged off, s-rea-ing -ith -onsternation as he -rashed destru-ti-el-
through the bush. The lands-ape shuddered. -- daughters giggled. I -as in
sho-- and -- teeth -hattered the rest of the -a- -o-e.
