I don't know if this will make any difference to you, and of course, your decision needs to be based on what works for you. But I was a one-cat household for a long time, having only tried one time before to introduce a kitten (one that was found by a family member). Mimi just couldn't handle it.
Then several years later (almost two years ago), Butter showed up. A full grown "wild" boy. I didn't have the heart to leave him out in the cold. To this day, Mimi hisses at him every time he walks by her. And they do get into their little spats every now and then. But they do co-exist. I've just had to get used to the fact that they will never be best of friends, but they do ok, just avoiding each other at all costs, most of the time.
Maybe some time will help. Put ear plugs in your ears and just let them figure it out. It is certainly not easy, nor is it always pleasant here, but they have survived it, and no one will be going anywhere.
