Actually, a female canine is a bitch and a male is a dog - in the world of show dogs, anyway.

I often heard male cats called Tom, and females called Tabby, regardless of their markings, or called Kitty.



Another to ponder:

Why are caucasians called white, when they range from pinkish to light brown with everything in between, and people of African descent called "black" when even the darkest-skinned ones are a dark brown, not black - and given all that, why aren't Hispanics, for example, called "tans"?

Karen's right actually; an unaltered male cat is a Tom, an unaltered female cat is a Queen, an unaltered female dog is a bitch, and an unaltered male dog is a stud -or- dog. We actually had a unit in terminology over the names and terms hehe
