    altering rat?

    hello!

I have a young male sweetheart who is alone in smaller cage than the females are in, I'd like to have him join them - have anyone altered a rat or had one? and where should I fix him? humane society does this?

any other ideas will be appreciated, thanks.

Whereabouts do you live? A good, experienced "small animal" vet can do the neutering.

Yes the can be altered I would as Karen has said look for an experienced small animal/exotic vet. I bet your rat would thank you for letting him have some buddies even at the expensive of his man-bits

Yes, rats can be neutered! I would make sure the vet does small and/or exotic pets. Make sure the vet knows that he's doing and doesn't just experiment on your rattie.

I learned that our local humane society doesn't alter rats. I found a vet office nearby that would do for $65. is that reasonable? I never have heard a rat being altered as much as cats were so I don't know the average of the cost.

cody says thank you all three.

I had two male rats, Oscar and Fred, that I had neutered so they could live with my 8 females...it was the best decision I made! However, it cost me $364 to get both of them done!! That's only because my vet is heinously over priced and charges an arm and two legs for procedures. Most places will not charge you that much- which I found out too later after the fact. He was going to charge me over $1000 to have tumors removed on 2 of my females. After the neutering, I especially loved how my boys did not have "male musk", that pungent odor that is common among boy ratties. They were super duper loveable and lived for quite some time with no health problems! For $65, I would DEFINITELY get him neutered!!

hello everyone, thank you all for kind thoughts. it's nice to have support here, not many would understand ratties. cody is home and well. it was a bit little over $65 - we forgot he needed a physical exam - but that's okay, anything for my boy.

jessika, hope your pup is well too. and cody says thanks frost too. here is he, sleeping in my laps.

You know, medical technology AMAZES me. I watched a spay today at school, and I'm just... amazed at the body and how they work, but even more amazed at the technologies we have to be able to perform surgeries like this... even on something so small as a rat!!!

I'm glad to hear everything went well and isn't he cute snuggling with you at home!
