Turtles and tortoises have lived on Earth for over two hundred million years. They belong to a group of reptiles that have existed since the dinosaurs roamed the Earth. Their soft bodies are protected by shells called carapaces. There is no major difference between turtles and tortoises, however turtles (and terrapins) live in water, while tortoises tend to live on land.
