    CJ - you have done everything for Jack, everything you could. It's clear that he is very loved.

    There are so few of us that know everything that could happen when we take our babies in, even everything about the illness they have. It's okay - you did your absolute best with what you have.

    I pray that the oxygen calms Jack's heart rate down...that his heart xray is ok. The best outcome is that the other part of the thyroid could be removed...or he could be put on a thyroid med to keep the levels good.

    HUGE PT Prayers for Jack.

    Oh my, what a horrible thing to have happened!! I would be so upset with the clinic that treated him. Whether or not you are low income or whatever, you deserve the same treatment as any other person with pets!! A vet is a vet, and they should know that they are treating all God's creatures. Shame on them, for putting you and Jack through this.

    I'll be praying for Jack and for you to pull through this. Big hugs.... we are all here if you need a shoulder!

    I'm so sorry about what you and Jack are going through. I'm praying that the oxygen will help him and that you receive some uplifting news this afternoon. Try not to be so hard on yourself, you could not have known that the vet wasn't going to everything he could for Jack. I would have assumed that a vet in practice, no matter what practice, would do their best and it is just awful that he did not. It's not your fault. I hope you'll be kind to yourself and give Sunny a hug. You guys need each other right now.

    Prayers for you and Jack. I am so sorry.
    Please don't second guess yourself. We all do the best we can, and you did the best you could. Whatever the outcome, Jack was loved dearly.

    Dear Kate
    I know what going through too b/c this last Valentines day we had to put my dog down since we think he had some brain tumor or something, either way he was just to sick for us to care for him. Poor Jack, I'm sure he knows how much you loved him and loved you for that all that much more. You must have had a special bond with him like Clifford and I had and a bond like that will never be forgotten. Prayers be with you and Kevin, for your loss.

    Did any of the docs use the term thyroid storm? That's what it sounds like to me.

    • Cats may present in a "thyroid storm" with severe tachycardia, open-mouthed breathing, hypoxia, and a "panic-attack" mental status. These cats may become aggressive and/or hysterical with handling.

    c. Acute Management

    • Reduce stress! Too much handling or restraint (blood draws, catheter placement, radiographs) will exacerbate catecholamine release, and can precipitate a stroke or a fatal cardiac arrhythmia.

    • Give supplemental oxygen and cage rest. Do not attempt to place an oxygen face mask on a hypoxic 'thyroid storm' cat!

    • Start a beta-blocking agent ASAP. Propranolol is the drug of choice because it blocks both the peripheral and cardiac effects of thyrotoxicosis, while more cardiac specific beta-blocking agents (e.g. atenolol) do not block the peripheral effects. Dose: Cat 1 - 2 mg/kg BID - TID; Dog 0.2 - 1 mg/kg BID - TID, to effect.

    ***********************************************

    Causes(in humans):

    * Infection: lung infection, throat infection or pneumonia
    * Blood sugar changes: Diabetic ketoacidosis, insulin-induced hypoglycemia
    * Recent surgery to the thyroid
    * Abrupt withdrawal of antithyroid medications
    * Radioactive iodine (RAI) treatment of the thyroid
    * Excessive palpation (handling/manipulation) of the thyroid
    * Severe emotional stress
    * An overdose of thyroid hormone
    * Toxemia of pregnancy and labor

    Thyroid storm is treated with a combination of antithyroid drugs, blockade iodine drug, beta-blockers, and treatment for any underlying non-thyroidal illness or infection that may be contributing to the thyroid storm.
