Melissa - I am so sorry that this happened to you, and it did happen to you, you didn't do anything to hurt this cat. You stopped, very many do not, and you tried. I'm willing to bet that if he'd survived the bump you would have rushed him off to the emergency vet, frantically worrying about how you were going to find the funds to treat him. His owner is to blame, and fate.

It's my worst nightmare, worrying about hitting an animal, especially a cat. I did have a mallard fly into my windscreen, shattering it completely, many summers ago. I spent hours and hours, all the time crying, scrambling through brush trying to find that bird but I never did. For many, many months afterwards I blamed myself for driving 2 miles an hour over the speed limit - it was a highway. If I'd been driving at exactly the speed limit, chances are that it would have cleared my car.

    Forgive yourself.

That Sadly Has Happened To Several Of The Porch Cats Who Lived Here And To Me Were As Much My Cats As My Indoor Companions. Its A Horrible Feeling Seeing Them Lying There, Or In Pain Sitting On The Porch Waiting For You To Make Them Better, When The Only Thing You Can Do Is Have The Animal Control Pick Them Up And Deliver Them To A Far Better Place.

Dont blame yourself, blame the owner for letting him out. I dont have anyhting against people who let their cats out, but anyone who lets their cat out knows the extreme amount of danger they are putting their cats into.

I have only hit an Opossum and a Seagull in my life. The Opossum got ran over by my left tire at about 75MPH, so Im sure it died fast. The only thing that made me sad was that I was actually trying to dodge it, then it stopped and turned around and ran back the other way causing me to run over it.

I also hit a Seagull that was taking off from the sidewalk, it hit my windshield at about 30MPH my speed. I dont think I killed it, but who knows if I injured it badly.

I felt bad both times, but I knew it wasnt my fault, and I didnt let it get to me.

The saddest thing Ive seen was a little tiny dog in the road, everyone was dodging it, and then after I passed it I looked in my rear view mirror and a huge truck just ran straight over it. That was sad =(
