Well, I don't even live in the States LOL. I like Burger King's hamburgers over the McDonals ones. Does it count?

They said on TV this morning that over 580,000 people voted and that CAAWS was handed their check yesterday.

koxka- CAAWS is not a shelter but a rescue group, that is what makes this so great.

The ten nonprofit finalists in Burger King’s Campaign For Your Cause™ were today awarded their share of $100,000 by Louisiana Secretary of State Jay Dardenne. The program, created and funded by local Burger King® restaurants, gave Baton Rouge area residents a chance to “Have it your Way” by nominating and voting for their favorite cause or charity at www.CampaignForYourCause.com. In the first phase of the campaign, over 131,000 South Louisiana citizens nominated over 4,000 different charities, schools, churches and other nonprofit concerns. At the close of this phase, the ten organizations receiving the most nominations became eligible for a chance at part of the $100,000 donation. In the second voting phase, citizens voted for their favorite causes either on the website or via text messaging. During this final voting phase, over 580,000 votes were cast.

The organization garnering the most votes was awarded $50,000. The next vote getters received a portion of the remaining dollars split as follows: second top vote getter, $25,000; third top vote getter, $11,000; and fourth through tenth, $2,000 each.

Secretary of State Jay Dardenne commented, “Campaign For Your Cause perfectly illustrates how one person’s vote can truly make a difference in directing the future of the communities in which we live.”

The cash awards, along with the projects each nonprofit has earmarked for these funds, are as follows:

Capital Area Animal Welfare Society (CAAWS): $50,000 awarded

The money will be used for community outreach, spay/neuter programs and humane education.

    • Baton Rouge General Foundation: $25,000 awarded

Funds will be earmarked for pediatric services including the pediatric burn unit.

    • Istrouma Council, Boy Scouts of America $11,000 awarded

Monies will be dedicated to cover costs for economically challenged youth and volunteer leaders to fully participate in values based outdoor programs at the Avondale Scout Reservation.

The following were awarded $2,000 each (listed in alphabetical order)

Career Compass of Louisiana $ 2,000 awarded

Monies will provide college and career coaching to high school seniors which helps both students in our area and the Louisiana workforce.
