They probably registered an IP address, but most people use something like Charter and it is difficult to tell origin. They could look up individual addresses, but that would take alot of time and require the cooperation of the service provider. Unless it is a indictable crime, the ISP is not going to cooperate.

I am quite sure that most of those at the top of NO and BR had out-of-state help from friends and relatives.

But time will tell.
