I'm sorry for your loss. I replied to your dog behavior thread too. If you do a search in this section for Dominique, you will find her story. My dogs killed her 2 year ago. Rebuilding my relationship with them came hard and took time. In the end, I had to though. Loosing them, even if it wasn't a physical loss, only added to my grief. Duke didn't mean to cause such pain; he didn't even think about that. I believe that if my dogs had thought "oh, this is gonna hurt Mom alot", they would have left Dom alone. I believe the same for Duke.

Now isn't the time and this isn't the right thread, but when you have had a bit of time and if you would like some suggestions/support from someone who has unfortunately been there too, please feel free to PM me.

    Godspeed Loki.

LES. I am so sorry about Loki. I understand how you feel towards Duke at this time but that will pass. When I was a teenager I had let our dog, Buck, out and he killed our little kitten, MC, the same way. It is not something I will ever forget witnessing and the feeling of there being nothing I could do at the time. My heart goes out to you and your family. Duke could not help it, just as Buck couldn't. It is instinct to chase what moves/runs. We never had a problem with Buck after that, even though we had other cats, inside and outside(we lived in the country) so don't think that he will always be like this because that is not necessarily true, only you know how to read your dog to see if maybe something in him has changed towards cats, maybe he will only be okay around them inside as stated above(?). Again, I am so, so very sorry for your family having to experience this...prayers for your little boy to find comfort in memories of his late best friend, prayers for you to recover from what you saw and prayers for Loki to run freely chasing grasshoppers at the Rainbow Bridge.

    I am so sorry.

I understand how you feel about Buck. I hope you can forgive him for doing what came naturally. I think it's true about inside/outside cats. I would probably never be able to trust him around any small animal again.

Loki was a beautiful cat. He will be sorely missed by all of us.

I am so sorry to be reading this.

Duke's prey drive kicked in; he chased something running. Keep him away from the other cat(s).

This is so sad; poor Loki and you. I dated a man who had two Labs and even though they were gentle, they were big dogs and I knew that, if their instinct kicked in, my cats would be dead in a heartbeat. I'm glad I trusted my instincts to never allow them near my cats. Your situation, though, appears to have been different. Duke was around Loki from the time he was a small kitten. There's no way you would've risked Loki's life had you known what Duke might do. It's tough enough that you saw it happen. Don't further punish yourself w/guilt. Just learn from it and keep your other cats safe. And guard your heart, too, because this is tough on you. Know that PTers are praying for you and that Loki is now at the bridge, pain and suffering behind him, looking forward to that day when you will meet again.
    Blessings,
    Mary
