Quite by chance actually. At the time I had just moved in to an apartment with my then boyfriend. He had grown up with a Yorkie and wanted to get a small dog. So we went to the local Humane Society but all the dogs were medium to large. He said if I saw a dog I wanted, we would take it home.
All these dogs were up at the doors of their kennels wanting to play and lick and were pawing at me.
And then there was Kia. Sitting way at the back of her kennel, staring at me. She never barked, never whined. Just stared.
I asked to spend some time with her and while in the room, she put her head in my lap and rolled over for belly rubs.
The boyfriend remarked that she didn't seem very playful.
Didn't matter to me. She just looked deep into my eyes and I was hooked.
In September Kia started to act funny around me. She nosed my side when I was napping one day and I told my doctor about it. He scheduled a laproscopy for me and they found I had a bad case of Endometriosis. It was wrapped around my apendix and had compromised it. So the doctors immediately removed it. It was exactly the area where Kia was nosing gently.
When the boyfriend and I split a few months later, I kept Kia.
