If you don't mind going $150 or so more I would snatch up a DSLR...the Nikon D40 is a nice deal and a great camera. And sometimes you can get it on sale for a bit more than $500 normally it is around $580

Oh, I totally forgot to mention this.. If you want a nice camera but don't want to pay a fortune for it, I suggest this one. I've been researching on it for a while and it takes some wonderful pictures. It's really similar to the Canon Powershot S3 except $100 cheaper.

I just bought a Sanyo VPC-5500, it's 5.0 megapixel and has 3x Optical zoom and it takes brilliant pictures so far!

I know the feeling, I hate kodiak! I have had to take mine in 4 times, in the 2 years I have had it! I have to wait one more year though. I have to go meet my future dog tormorrow and I have to take a camera that doesn't work very well.
Thanks so much Ashley for the siggy!

I, too, hated Kodak and said I'd never own one. BUT...

If you step up a level in price, you get what you pay for. My Uncle paid somewhere around $300 for my 12x optical zoom, 6.1MP camera and I LOVE it. It can go from fully automatic to fully manual. I can't think of a time I've brought it out and been disappointed with the shots it produced.

I have the Fuji FinePix S5200 and I absolutely LOVE it! It was on sale for $299, which was a steal. It takes great macros, and has many features. It is also a really beautiful camera. Here is the full review.

Some pictures I took with this camera...
