My/My parents dog Toby....will go to the bridge today.

When I was 18 and had just met Rick (who is now my hubby) I adopted a puppy from the humane society. She was about 3 months old and her name was Alaska and I changed it to Toby. She is a GSD/Lab, this past April 1st she turned 13, I'm telling you this because today I was told she has bone cancer and does not have much time left on earth.
When she was just 10 months old she was hit by a car and broke her leg, 2 years later she tore her ACL and had surgery to repair it. Ugh... not even 3 and she's already got 2 bum legs. Here we are 10 years later and she's still spry! Just last week she caught a rabbit!!
I moved out of the house when Toby was 5, she didn't take the move well, so my parents took her back and she was happy as ever to be back with them and I was happy for her.
My parents only live 15 mins away so I see her quite a bit.
Toby's entire leg started swelling Monday morning and my parents are leaving to go out of town Wednesday morning so my mom got her in to the vet asap.(she stays home, my uncle and grama live next door and take care of her when they are gone)
The vet said it's bone cancer and the tumor is the size of a fist and it on her hip bone and cutting circulation off to her leg, making it swell.
She said no to putting her to sleep right away because, she was in no pain at all. No wimpers out of her when it was touched, nothing. So we just have to wait and see how she does.
I scanned pictures of her (sorry for the cruddy quality)

    CRAZY puppy!!!

OH Toby loves water!!! She'd stick her face in and blow bubbles!!

    More in next post....

Her fav toy of all time was her plastic rat! She took him everywhere!! Even into the pool!

These next 2 are from her brief stay at my house.

Oh Toby.... 13 years we were blessed to have you in our lives!
I promise I won't let you suffer, I promise you that I'll put aside my own feelings and only think about you when that time comes. I promise I'll let you go be free again.

    I love you Toby.

Is it just me or does younger Toby remind anyone else of a boy that is very dear to my heart? I wonder if that's what my boy looked like as a puppy!

Angie, Toby is beautiful. I am so sorry that she's been diagnosed with cancer. What a sweet girl she is. She has the most soulful eyes, especially in that last picture.

I don't even know what to say. Just know you, your parents and family are in my thoughts at this very difficult time.
    Toby is a beautiful dog.
Our goal in life should be - to be as good a person as our dog thinks we are.

Thank you for the siggy, Michelle!

Yes Kay, puppy pictures of Toby do remind me of Simba!

Thank you all for your kind words.... I can't stop crying....I couldn't bring myself to go see her last night. I'm going today after work.
My parents leave to go out of town tomorrow morning (Wed) so I'll have to check on her or at the least talk to my uncle (who will be keeping a close eye on her) everyday to see if she's gotten worse.
I have to keep telling myself I can't let her suffer... I can't let her be in pain.. I need to let her go. Tobys vet is a dear friend and I hope she'll come to the house when it's Toby's time.
    Again, thank you all.

Oh Angie, I am so sorry she has been diagnosed with cancer. She is a beautiful girl, who obviously is enjoying her life. The pictures of her with her plastic mouse made me laugh, very cute.

I'm so sorry to hear this. I know that dogs get old, but we always hope they won't.

I assume that they don't want to amputate because of her age.

Make the most of every day while you can and you won't have any regrets later. Prayers and hugs to the whole family.
