I remember when I was a teenager, our family cat, a veeeeery talkative meezer-domestic cross, went missing when she was expecting babies. She ended up on the other side of town. We put an ad in the paper, and when my step-dad rang them, he recognised her meow on the phone straight away as she was chatting away in the background 
Also, that information above about checking nooks and crannies is a very good idea - my Mum's Burmese think nothing of spending almost 24 hours in a linen closet!
