They're not related, the Maverick was a chassis all to itself (with the Comet), while the Cougar shared a platform with the Mustang, which was an offshoot of the Falcon.

My uncle had an old 66 vette that he let turn to rust in his yard... when he sold it, it was in much worse shape than the one ya'll just bought.
