She isn't a little messy she has mats over her entire body that takes weeks or months of not brushing her and she is very skinny you can feel every bone in her body. She also cringes when a hand is lowered towards her.

Honestly, none of us KNOW how long she has been missing, or what type of owner she had before.

I also think the right thing to do is to try to find an owner, and handle the situation from there.

I know several dogs who would have been happy to accept the challenge of disproving that.

I used to do a lot of in-home care for the elderly after school, and on some of the places I only did weekly visits I would groom small companion dogs of elderly, often somewhat disabled clients. Even if I did a thourough job one week, it wasn't uncommon to find the dog matted again the next week simply from lack of daily brushing.

I also bathed them, clipped their nails, etc. The owners loved them insanely, but simply couldn't provide the type of care most of us would like to. Often, they weren't socialized well enough to be very confident with new strangers... many who I don't believe had ever been mistreated might cringe if you first reached for them.

Maybe her owner is just someone who needs help or guidance. Maybe her owner is a great owner who has been looking for their dog for a very long time. Maybe her owner is terrible. None of us can know that for sure right now.

Do you really feel okay taking the chance that her owners are such horrible, unreasonable monsters that they never deserve to know what happened to their pet? Even if they are neglectful, bad owners (which we DO NOT KNOW) it probably wouldn't be too difficult to talk them into turning the dog over to you. And then you'd never have to wonder if you did the right thing...

    Just my 2 cents worth.

She looks purebred to me just in bad shape. we had a schnauzer some lady turned in today that looks exactly like the dog you found and she went into foster care. but she wasn't messy.. I hope you do find her owners, but she could have been let out looking like this and they maybe were going to get her groomed soon.. you just never know. If you don't find her owners.. are you going to keep her? I would take her to the vet if you are planning on keeping her to make sure nothing is medically wrong with her and check if she's spayed and if not if you plan on keeping her and don't find the owners, I'd spay her if she's not spayed. and it looks likes she needs to be groomed, badly.

Are there any posters of missing dogs in the area?

Anything in the newspaper which could be this dog?

Someone who cares would take steps to find their dog. Or any other pet.

Well her owner came to the door and my mom answered and let him have her. I don't know whether he was a good owner or not but she went missing this morning (right before I found her)

I think if she was always chained in a yard and forgotten, it would have taken a while to notice she was gone, and maybe they wouldn't have gone door to door knocking?

It is just hard to say.

Maybe he does love the dog i'll never know. But he really needs to brush her and feed her. Her nails were also really long. She does live on a chain i'm pretty sure she permanently lived on that chain. She was too dirty and stinky to have just ran around for a few minutes.

Can you find out where the dog lives? If you think he isn't taking care of her properly, maybe your parents can report him.

Maybe an anonymous note to Animal Control about her condition, or a letter to her owner about her nails and coat ... now that we know she was only missing since this morning, that sheds a different light on things.

I can only assume that if you know how she lives, you must have figured out where she lives?

Probably not far away if he was walking door-to-door and found your house... sounds like you are still in a good position to possibly help her out some.

They live across the street but they are back in the woods so I can't see anything back there. I have been over there before but I guess the dog looked different then it had less hair. When I was over there the dog had a doghouse and a chain. Maggie had wondered over there and they called me. This was about a year ago.
