While in Traverse City, which is popular for it's cherries, there were many dog treats sold made from cherries. I can't recall exactly, but I believe the packaging said that cherries have been known to help dogs with arthritis.
I think you are right though in saying that it's the cherry pit that's toxic...not the cherry fruit itself.
Kind of like how apple seeds are toxic however, my dogs get plenty of treats made from apples.
The list is quite extensive and extreme and some are a no brainer, like the 'Food Preparation Items', honestly...who would feed their dog plastic forks or aluminum foil on purpose!?
However, I think it really depends on the dogs overall health and size.
Kia once ate an entire bag of hershey kisses...foil and all. All it gave her was diarreha and shiney poop for about a week. Now, had it been a Chihuahua that did that, you'd probably be looking at a very sick if not dead dog.
Kia has had mushrooms and broccoli in small amounts on occasion with no reprecussions. But I wouldn't feed it to her all day every day.

Plus the list name is a bit of a misnomer. It says FOODS that are bad for dogs but lists Anti-freeze and household cleaners? Since when are those food?
