To train a dog you have to think like a dog!
Mine have totally different sounding names too. If I call Mist, Jess comes as well but if I call Jess, only she comes and Mist doesn't bother.
I think it is Jess scared to death of missing something but Mist doesn't care about that, lol.
I am lucky if I can get mine to come at all right now. So I'm not too helpfully sorry![]()
Ohh yea!!! That really works! lol..Originally Posted by applesmom
I am laughing at this topic. My shepherds- they would come to " You guys" but other than that- only look with interest if I only called one. The Borzois- well- lol.. They will come if I call my husband- lol - .. This same group of dogs can hear the silent lift of the cookie jar- yet CAN NOT hear me call them in the yard if they are hunting as a group- . I swear they glance over their shoulder at the other one and say- " Mom is calling- go see what she wants-" as they continue to keep going.. Shepherds- they are not..![]()
LOL, well then, the new Collie should fit in just fine with the hunter Borzoi's. When you call Femka, Galina, Hottie and Zubin then Major can just round 'em up for you and herd them to the door.Originally Posted by borzoimom

It's pretty much impossible. But mine have gotten in a routine for when I take them for walks separately.
Example:
"Mickey, come. Molly, stay."
To the dog who is staying, I will say it lowly and sternly.
"Did you ever notice when you blow in a dog's face he gets mad at you?
But when you take him in a car he sticks his head out the window." -- Steve Bluestone
I'm just curious as to why you want to do this? When I say come..no matter what..I want all of my dogs to get their butts to me as soon as possible, lol. Now, sometimes I'll have them all on a "wait" at the door and I use their name as a release. I just don't want the dog to ever second guess the word come and to sit and think if their name was called, but that's just me.![]()
I was chuckling at this (' get their butts to me..) - I uh well uh have used that sentence a uh few times.. lol.. But seriously- I wish mine do seperate better out of this " hunting pack" mode. I know I have a uphill battle as its been how they were raised for the length of the breed to hunt in packs. However- Hottie, although he thinks he is the " MASTER Mister of the Mountain" the fact is- he physically could not back up what he starts like in chasing a wild animal. Femka- much smaller than Hottie, is actually as serious " black bullet" hunter- with speed, and agility to back to it up. By discouraging hottie- who would probably spot something to chase quicker- it stops the other 3 from going " hmm- I wonder if if we can make it run.." Zubin is the one that makes you laugh- here is my favorite story-Originally Posted by k9krazee
One afternoon I had Zubin out with Femka. Zubin spotted a deer and ran at the deer. It was the rut- and the buck stood there and stomped his hoof into the ground- .. Zubin STOPPED IN HIS TRACKS TO A screetchhin halt- then started doing the puppy dive of circles around and around infront of the deer- I SWEAR ( !!) Femka turned to look at me- as I was coming down the yard calling trying to get Zubin to leave that pointed buck alone- and Femkas face was " THAT IS THE SORRIEST BORZOI I EVER SAW IN MY LIFE- LOOK AT HIM- ITS NOT GOING TO RUN IF HE KEEPS DIVING into circles- .." I swear she was rolling her eyes- I started to laugh- Zubin stopped spinning as the buck just backed up slowly in a walk. Finally Zubin came back to me- with the buck still standing in the yard..
To this day- this one buck will enter the yard - walking very very slowly one step at a time. As the dogs watch him go- but without a run- they do not move..
I train this by starting out with games. Training with games makes it more fun and easier to understand. My dogs favorite game is fetch. So I would take them outside I would tell them both to sit in a "by me" position(beside me on my left). Then I would say "Name Wait". Then I would throw the ball. and then just as I send the other on to go get teh ball I grab the collar of the one staying by my side. Then I immediately praise before they have even had a chance to get their butt off the ground. The I switch and do this with the other one. I do this about 5 times each time I play fetch with them. Till it sinks in. In a couple of weeks I can put one in a sit, down or stand and send the other to get teh ball.
For other commands I work with my husband. We each take a dog and work them first at a distance form each other(we steadily move closer though as they listen and obey) and give different commands. If we get to a distance where they ignore us for teh others command then we stay at that distance and keep working at it till we can agian start moving closer or further away. They we switch. In a few weeks we can either be side by side or distance apart, in the house or outside the house and have then listen to seperate commands. Patience is the key though.

I had the same problem. To do this, my wife held both dogs by their collars. First, I commanded "stay". Then, whenever I called one, my wife released him while firmly holding on to the other dog. We repeated these over two days, and finally it began to work. Now we can call one at a time, if we have them to stay first (otherwise, they both come!). It was frustratung in the beginning but with patience it really worked.
