She hasn't read all of the Christmas books to her kids, she hasn't done her Christmas baking, she hasn't bought the Christmas gifts, etc. If you don't believe in God or the birth of Jesus, why in the world do you do Christmas at all??Give me a break!!!!
Because I can't get the Solstice off....it's too close to Xmas.Originally Posted by RICHARD

Perhaps christians should move their celebratory day away from the pagan celebration they were trying to cover up when they chose December 25th in the first place. Perhaps they should also ditch all of the pagan traditions of the holiday. (the decorated tree, wreaths, the YULE log, etc.) Either that, or let it go and let other people enjoy the season as well.
Really, why berate someone for wanting to give gifts, bake cookies, read stories to their children, and make merry just because they don't believe in your deity?

Thank you Wolf_Q!
Actually, I think it had more to do with trying to survive at that time than celebrating a pagan holiday. It was deadly being a Christian around that time. Lots of them were fed to Roman lions or used as living human torches. If they had been left to celebrate when they really wanted too, they probably would have picked a date closer to the actually birthdate of Jesus.Originally Posted by CathyBogart
As for the other pagan traditions; I can live without them. I usually don't even mess with putting up a tree. I will admit to sending Christmas cards though!![]()

Christmas Trees are not JUST for christmas! They're a symbol of the winter holidays! Also, I hate when people call them "Kwanza(sp?)/Hanukka/Christmas Trees" or "Holiday Trees" because they aren't!Theyre christmas trees, always have been, always will be. No offense to anyone who celebrates anything else, but seriously. Next we're going to be changing Christmas carols to Christmahanukwanza carols! At my school someone got in trouble for singing Jingle Bells, saying it was something about religion. But, if you think about it, it NEVER says anyting about any holiday!Im not one fo the people boycotting the stores with "Happy Holidays" of whatever in their window, but I understand why they do it. You could just say,"Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukka, and Happy Kwanza!" 12 days until christmas and I still have yet to see a Christmas sign in a store window! If we aren't allowed to show our religion or whatever like that, how come there are still the Santa's in all the stores? I'm surprised they haven't banned it yet! Or the Christmas carols, in stores and on the radio! Don't they talk about christmas and Jesus?!?!?!?!?!
Well, thats done, so Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukka, and Happy Kwanza! (There, its not so hard is it?)
in on the joke and i cant stop laughing
No, the decorated tree was originally a pagan Yule tradition, NOT an Xmas tradition.Originally Posted by JuniorxMyxLove

Christmas was moved to the date it is celebrated now by the Roman emperor when he was trying to make Christianity the official religion of Rome. The date was chosen to overlap and obscure the celebrations of other religions.
How did this turn into an argument about who's religion started first and who's is more important? Isn't this what the thread is about trying to stop?
If someone had the same birthday as you would you tell them it CAN'T be celebrated on that day because it was your day first? That is an extreme and not very relevant case but that is kind of what this is turning into.
I don't care who's day it was first. Or what a tree means or what lights mean or what a candle means. I put up a tree because I think it is beautiful. I put up lights because I think they are beautiful and they make me happy. I celebrate Christmas because I believe in it and it makes me happy. Others celebrate their holiday their way because it makes them happy. I just wish people would stop raining on everyone else's parade just because they are in a bad mood.
R.I.P my dear Sweet Teddy. You will be missed forever. We love you.

I personally have no problem with 'Happy Holidays' - it's when people aren't ALLOWED to say Merry Christmas that bothers me.
Are you going to get arrested if you say Merry Christmas?Originally Posted by JenBKR

You are allowed to say Merry Christmas.
It's sad that a buisness should get flak for displaying a Christmas sign, banner, decoration, whatever... but people are petty. I think those that gripe about such things are just miserable people with nothing better to do than to rain on others parades.
And in such circumstances, the buisness shouldn't change a thing and should tell the griper to get a life.

You know, I've often wondered how long that will last. With Christmas getting tossed out of everything, it's only a question of time when all business start staying open.Originally Posted by ramanth

Ok, everyone, I found out whose fault the entire Christmas tree mess is!
It was Queen Victoria of England. In the 1840s she and her husband, who was from Germany, put a tree up in their Palace for Christmas. The tree was a common practace in his country for holidays. She liked that and put one up in the Palace for Christmas. Everyone started copying it and it became a regular tradition in England and the US since.
So blame it all on Queen Vickie!!!![]()

I don't think Christmas will ever stop being celebrated. I can only imagine the uproar if government employees were told they had to work.Originally Posted by momoffuzzyfaces

I dislike PC stuff as well but on the flip side I see nothing wrong with places deciding to decorate with the words Happy Holidays vs. Merry Christmas if they just want a well rounded greeting that covers all the religions that celebrate this month.
People have been using 'Happy Holidays' and 'Season's Greetings' for years before all this PC stuff hit the fan, but nowaday's if that is displayed, people gripe that the companies and stores are folding under PC pressure.
How so??
Like Twisterdog said, it's not about what is said as much as it's the genuine feeling behind it.
