Why do cats do that elevator rear thing? My cat didn't always - it just started a year or two ago. The veterinarian told me that when she places herself in the meat loaf position (facing away from me) for sleep, it's because she considers me her alpha and is being deferential by pointing her bottom in my direction, as she would have with her mom-cat or her kitten would have with her. I wonder if a mom-cat grooms her kitten's bottom in response? Maybe elevator rear is a similar kitten to mom-cat thing.
