I believe positive reinforcement by redirecting his desire to chew the leash to something else is the best solution, however; if you are looking for a "Taste" that will distract him, try a very hot tabasco sauce. I am not talking about Louisiana hot sauce, but something even hotter. It needs to be hot enough that he won't build up a tolerance for it.
