I have to agree, animals can learn what certain things like this mean...Marta can recognize dog toys from other purchases. When I bring home shopping bags, and I put them on the floor she will of course sniff through them, and if I happen to get them a toy she will take it out of the bag. She's learned that anything fluffy or squeaky is for them. They've also learned to get excited when they see a plastic bag, as it might mean they have something good in store for them.

I do get my pets gifts for their birthdays and Christmas. They may not realize the significance of the date, but they do know when something is happening and getting toys and treats and it makes them happy. Sure, giving them gifts makes me happy, but it makes them happy, too.
