Well, after reading all your posts, I deleted mine. I was infuriated by what I read but didn't realize PETA was involved. After knowing THAT, I see it all more clearly.

"Punching" a horse sounds so cruel though. But since I don't know much about horses other than I think they are such beautiful, gentle animals, I'd appreciate it if anyone can enlighten me.

agreed this website sounds extremist. Horses are HUGE animals and they can be stubborn. many things on ranches actually seem cruel till you are actually out there doing it, I have heard the same stuff about stockdog training, to an outsider it seems cruel as the trainers yell at, hit the dogs and smack poles in front of the dogs, even I thought that way..till I was actually out there in the feild training my dogs on sheep, suddenly I understood that these things were needed, its not cruel its the only way to get their attention.

I mean has anyone seen what happens to animals in the orginal "My Friend Flicka"(1943)? I mean its a good movie but imagine actually being on the set working with these animals.

I always try to find several reputable sources of information that all agree on the same story before I believe things on the internet ... or anywhere for that matter.

You can pretty much always find a website that backs up any point of view in the world ... and then you can easily find the polar opposite.
"We give dogs the time we can spare, the space we can spare and the love we can spare. And in return, dogs give us their all. It's the best deal man has ever made" - M. Facklam

"We are raised to honor all the wrong explorers and discoverers - thieves planting flags, murderers carrying crosses. Let us at last praise the colonizers of dreams."- P.S. Beagle

"All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost. From the ashes a fire shall be woken, A light from the shadows shall spring; Renewed shall be blade that was broken, The crownless again shall be king." - J.R.R. Tolkien

Some pleasure horses can be 5000 pounds. Take a 125 pound girl and get her to tap a horse with her finger. The horse won't even feel it. Get her to nudge it in the side to walk on, it won't work on all horses. Get her to kick it harder, the horse calmly walks on. Smacking and punching a horse would be like a tap to us.

It's hard to explain unless you actually ride.

Yes, looking at PETA's involvement now, it does seem pretty extreme. It still irks me that fox lied about the two horses' deaths, but I also don't know a lot about horses, so I can see how this might have happened.

Bleh, PETA contorts everything so semi-convincingly. Editing the OP...

I remember the first time I saw a Clydesdale. I was in awe. I asked the trainer, "Would he mind if he petted him?" (He was asleep.) His trainer replied, "I don't think he'd notice."

I understand where you are coming from. However, it is only hitting the horse in certain areas that will not produce a painful reaction. For example, many people believe a riding crop is cruel, but when used properly, it's simply an extra leg. It should only be used to give a sharp tap just behind the girth or on the shoulder to remind a horse who's boss. When it is used with serious force, or in other areas such as the legs, back or hindquarters, that is cruel as it causes pain. Hence if you smack a horse in these areas it would produce the same result.

Back on topic, it does sound a little fishy to me on both parts. I don't think I will watch that film.

Thanks for clarifying it, Buttercup. I also read the link that Staci posted about PETA, and signed the petition to have their 501(c)(3) status revoked. I've never liked PETA. Although I do believe everyone has a right to freedom of speech and expression, PETA is way too far left wing for me.

Like most of you, I believe that they are over exagerating. I really don't need to add much more to this, as most of you already said it.

I saw the movie and it was a really good story. My aunt started bawling her eyes out!

I probably won't see the movie in theaters, seeing as I'm broke. But I will rent it.

Donna, I spent a lot of time around horses growing up. You really do have to be physical with them to get their attention. I've personally had to shove or "punch" a horse to get it to move or keep it from crushing me into a fence or wall. Especially when working around draft horses.

One of my first experiences with a horse, I was feeding my friend's Arab and forgot to keep my palm flat. Next thing I know, my fingers are in his mouth and he's not letting go. I tried prying his mouth open, slapping his nose, nothing worked. I cried out to my friend who told me to punch him in the cheek. My reaction was, . I told her I didn't want to hurt him.

She came over, gave him a swift sock in the cheek and he let go of my fingers. Slightly bruised but thankfully not broken. The Arab gave my friend a look like, 'What was that for?' and then went back to trying to find food in my pockets.

When you see cruelty cases or hear about them of someone punching a dog or a cat wich wiegh between 10-90 pounds yes you imagine it being terrible. Now transfering that to a 5000 pound animal of pure muscle by a normal weight person to the horse its just a smack like mother would do to tell her kid to straighten up. Except the "kid" is way bigger then the "mom". Hope that made sense.

I personally think that this site is just as bad as PETA except for the opposite reason. I came across it once and saw a picture of dead rabbits spelling out the word PETA on that site....

I will go and see the movie. and I will enjoy it!!!
I second that. Im SO sick of PETA.
